Hamster Care in Pakistan: Cage, Food, Wheel and Summer Heat
23 October 2026 Β· 4 min read
Hamsters are often a child's first pet, and they are sold in pet markets across Pakistan with a tiny cage, a bag of seeds and very little advice. A hamster lives about two to three years, and how good those years are depends mostly on three things: a big enough cage, the right food and protection from heat. Here is what to get right.
Syrian or Dwarf?
- Syrian (golden) hamsters are the larger kind, around 15 cm long. They must live alone: adult Syrians fight, sometimes fatally, so never house two together.
- Dwarf hamsters (Campbell's, Winter White and Roborovski) are smaller and faster. Some live in same-sex pairs, but fights do happen; separate them at the first sign of chasing, squeaking or wounds.
If you are not sure which you have, a Syrian is noticeably bigger than a dwarf and has a longer face.
The Cage: Bigger Than the Shop Sells
A hamster can run several kilometres in a night, and the small barred cages sold with them are a common cause of stress and bar-biting. Aim for at least 100 Γ 50 cm of floor space; a large clear plastic storage box with a ventilated lid is a cheap way to get there.
- Deep bedding. Hamsters burrow. Give them 15 to 20 cm of bedding so they can dig tunnels.
- Safe bedding. Unscented paper bedding or aspen shavings. Avoid cedar and pine, whose oils irritate the airways, and avoid fluffy cotton "nesting" material, which wraps around legs and blocks the gut if eaten.
- The right wheel. A solid running surface, no rungs. At least 28 cm across for a Syrian and 20 cm for a dwarf; if the back arches while running, the wheel is too small.
- A hide, chews and water. A hiding house, untreated wooden chews for the teeth, which never stop growing, and a water bottle or a heavy bowl.
- A sand bath for dwarfs. A shallow dish of plain small-animal sand helps them keep their coat clean. Use sand, not fine chinchilla dust, and never clumping cat litter.
What Hamsters Eat
- A good hamster mix or pellets as the base, about a tablespoon a day. Hamsters hoard food in their nest; that is normal, so check the stash and remove anything fresh that is going off.
- Fresh vegetables a few times a week, in small pieces: carrot, cucumber, broccoli, a little spinach.
- A little protein now and then: a fingernail-sized piece of boiled egg or plain boiled chicken.
- Never: chocolate, onion, garlic, citrus fruit, raw beans, or salty and sugary human food.
Campbell's and Winter White dwarfs are prone to diabetes, so keep sweet fruit and treats to a minimum for them.
Heat and Cold
Hamsters do not cope with heat. Above about 30Β°C they are at risk of heatstroke, and a Pakistani summer is far above that. Keep the cage in the coolest room, out of direct sun and away from a window. On hot days, put a ceramic tile in the cage for the hamster to lie on, and a frozen water bottle wrapped in cloth against the outside of the cage. Plan for load-shedding before the heat arrives.
In a cold room in winter, a hamster can go into torpor: cold, limp and barely breathing. It is not necessarily dead. Warm it gradually in your hands or a warm room, and keep the cage away from cold floors and draughts.
Handling and Routine
Hamsters are nocturnal and wake in the evening; waking one during the day is a common reason for bites. Let it sniff your hand first, then scoop it up with both hands, sitting on the floor so a jump does not become a fall. Spot-clean soiled bedding every few days, but avoid emptying the whole cage often; a hamster that loses its nest and stores every week is a stressed hamster.
Health Warning Signs
- Wet tail: diarrhoea, a wet and dirty rear end and lethargy. It is an emergency, especially in young Syrians.
- Not eating, or overgrown teeth.
- Sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nose, or a hunched posture.
- Bald patches and scratching, often mites.
Find a vet who sees small animals before you need one; not every clinic does.
What We Stock (and What We Don't)
We don't stock hamster food or cages yet. If you are looking for something for your hamster, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether we can help. Our bowls and feeders include small steel bowls that are easy to keep clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two hamsters live together?
Syrian hamsters never. Dwarf hamsters sometimes, in same-sex pairs, but watch for fighting and separate them at the first sign.
How long do hamsters live?
Usually two to three years.
Do hamsters need a bath?
No water baths; they groom themselves. Dwarf hamsters enjoy a sand bath in plain small-animal sand.
Why is my hamster biting the cage bars?
Usually boredom or a cage that is too small. A bigger cage, deep bedding and a proper solid wheel usually stop it.
